Alla is Keith Blake. He was born in 1950, in
Kingston. At an early age, he joined a vocal
group called "The Leaders" and
went on to live in Prince Edward Emmanuel's
Rasta Camp, where he stayed about six years.
Quite a background already.
After living at the Bull Bay camp, he
went on and started to record for a number
of producers, among who Tappa Zukie is quite
noteworthy.
The time was around 1976. And it is from
this period, that the tracks on Only Love
Can Conquer were produced. 14 tracks, of
which several come in Discomix style: that
is the vocal track and the dub track in one
long mix.
The vocals were recorded at King Tubby's
studio, where the King himself along with
Scientist made sure that everything sounded
right.
And it sure sounds right! It's clear,
that there's something more going on than
just a little fine tuning on the mixing
table. Everything is lively: the music, the
vocals and the mixing too.
This is the kind of Roots Rockers Reggae
that will definitely last for decades and
decades. And in fact, it already has,
hasn't it?
In case you wondered, unfortunately not
all the tracks come with their DUB version.
But there are some outstanding DUBS on the
Blood and Fire release FREEDOM SOUNDS IN
DUB, so you might just want to check out
that one, too.
